College basketball fans in our state are quite familiar with the contributions Isaiah Joe of Fort Smith Northside and Desi Sills of Jonesboro have made to the Arkansas Razorbacks.
There are other former in-state stars playing Division I basketball as well this season. Here’s a closer look at a few of them:
Avery Benson (Siloam Springs, Springdale Har-Ber/Texas Tech)
Basketball fans flipping channels may not recognize the player with the long hair, beard and tattoos coming off the bench for Texas Tech.
He’s Avery Benson, the much-traveled player who went from Siloam Springs to Springdale Har-Ber to Southwest Christian Academy in Little Rock for his senior year. Texas Tech coach Chris Beard, who formerly coached at Arkansas Little-Rock, invited Benson to walk on at Texas Tech, and the move has worked out quite well for the Red Raiders, who were 11-5 overall heading into Saturday’s Big 12 matchup with Iowa State.
So well, in fact, Benson was rewarded with a full scholarship last week. Benson expressed his appreciation on Twitter.
