Heather Hiles, chief executive of California’s new online community college, is out after an 11-month tenure marked by controversy and complaints.
The Board of Directors for Calbright — who are also the Board of Governors for the state’s community college system — accepted Hiles’ resignation this week, said Tom Epstein, president of both boards.
Hired in February to set up and run the online college that at the time was only an idea, Hiles became the fourth-highest-paid community college leader in the state, earning a base salary of $385,000 and a $10,000 annual car allowance, plus bonuses. State Chancellor Eloy Ortiz Oakley, at $322,848, doesn’t come close.
She will be on paid administrative leave through March 31.
