Emily Ward has spent her life helping others. Since retiring from a 43-year nursing career, Ward now works as a pharmacy tech in her hometown of Cornish, Maine, where she sees many of her former patients.

She also works the front desk at a quaint hotel in town and helps out at the local physical therapy and fitness center a few days each week.

Mesothelioma may have slowed her down at one time, but staying busy today isn’t an issue.

Diagnosed with pleural mesothelioma in 2012, Ward credits treatment pioneer Dr. David Sugarbaker for giving her a life to live. She credits medical oncologist Dr. David Jackman for the quality of life she’s had the past several years.

Ward became a contributing writer for The Mesothelioma Center at Asbestos.com in November 2018. She uses her experience as a survivor and a nurse to help other survivors make sense of their diagnosis.

She has a good relationship with Jackman because he is a straight shooter. She takes the same approach with her contributed content — addressing issues and questions mesothelioma survivors typically face.

Ward is living proof that through determination and a positive outlook, those battling mesothelioma can have a good quality of life.
