Car insurance companies may refuse to payout on repair bills for damage if they determine motorists have broken these rules while on the road this winter. Using your car during a weather warning is not enough in itself to invalidate cover as long as motorists are driving sensibly.
However, failing to take into account the current road conditions or making common errors could see your cover axed which will make the driver responsible for repair bills.
Go Compare’s Car insurance expert, Matt Oliver said: “While driving when a yellow weather warning is issued doesn’t affect your insurance cover, there are actually a number of ways drivers could invalidate their cover, or break the law when driving in adverse weather conditions.
“This means, even if your area has had its weather alert downgraded, you should still exercise caution when it comes to taking your car on the road, and avoid doing it if at all possible.”
Some of the mistakes could even see motorists hit with added penalties such as fines of up to £5,000 and court appearances.
