A decade after making his PGA Tour debut, 32-year-old Eddie Olson of Aptos is taking his golf game back to the highest level. He’ll compete in the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines beginning Thursday.
Olson shot 5-under-par 67 and tied for third at the event’s Monday qualifier at Bear Creek Golf Club in Murrieta.
The top four scorers Monday advanced. Joining Olson are co-medalists Harry Hall and Jacob Bergeron, who shot 66, and former Cal golfer KK Limbhasut, one of five players to shoot 67.
Olson started on the 10th hole and was even through seven holes, with a birdie on the par-5 11th and bogey on the par-4 15th. He was flawless the rest of the way, carding five more birdies over his final 11 holes. He earned birdies on the par-4 17th, par-5 3rd, par-3 sixth, par-4 seventh, and par-5 ninth to sneak in.
Three other players — Kevin Lucas, David Pastore and Chandler Blanchet — shot 67 but failed to advance. Over the past decade, Olson has shot under par several times in qualifiers, only to miss the cut in heartbreaking fashion. Monday, his final putt got him in.
