WESTPORT — Could the fourth time be the charm for recreational marijuana in Westport?
That question will be answered at the Feb. 11 Special Town Meeting, which will feature an attempt to end the town’s prohibition of recreational marijuana sales.
Petitioners drove this Town Meeting, which was scheduled by selectmen earlier this month.
Westport attorney Brian Corey, who represents four groups looking for a pot license, submitted a petition to selectmen looking to repeal a prohibition on the sales of recreational pot. There are other pot articles on the meeting warrant, some pertaining to zoning and some looking to allow proposed medical marijuana dispensaries to expand potential clientele to recreational pot users.
In 2018, a Special Town Meeting and an election ballot upheld a prohibition on recreational pot sales in town.
In May 2019, a farmers group tried to persuade voters to allow farmers to grow marijuana and sell it to entities outside Westport borders. That, too, was rejected by voters.
These articles represent the fourth time in two years that town voters have been asked to approve the sales of recreational pot.
